CHICAGO — Dr. Danielle Maurici-Pollock, assistant professor of the Simmons University School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) in Boston, MA has been selected as the 2024 recipient of the ¹ú²úÊÓƵÍø's Beta Phi Mu Award. This award is given in recognition of the achievement of a library school faculty member or another individual for distinguished service to education for librarianship. This annual award, which consists of $1,000 and a citation of achievement, is sponsored by the Beta Phi Mu International Library Science Honor Society.

Maurici-Pollock holds a Bachelors of Arts in Creative Writing from University of Houston, a Master of Library Science from University of Missouri-Columbia, and a PhD in Communication and Information from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She has developed an extensive record of scholarship and a lasting impression on her works as a scholar, professor, and colleague.

Maurici-Pollock, is a dedicated advocate and is recognized by her students and colleagues for her exemplary efforts in promoting sustainable practices and raising awareness around Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA). She has served as a faculty advisor for Spectra, the LGBTQIA+ student group as Simmons SLIS and worked directly with first-generation students.

Through her leadership and innovative initiatives, Maurici-Pollock has inspired the next generation of librarians to consider the needs of research, the bias of data, and the possibilities of ethical information use. They praise her use of virtual learning environments and her understanding the bias of data and data use. students alike are eager to work with her, impressed by her ability to understand classroom pedagogy and translate it to the practice of librarianship. Students view her classroom environment as a safe space for engagement. Students see her as mentor, advocate, and resource for navigating a new career.

Maurici-Pollock’s scholarship is also focused on the role of data in publishing and research data as noted in her recent co-authored articles “what if academic publishing worked like fan publishing” and “the role of scientific data in emerging research community.”

The jury was impressed by Dr. Maurici-Pollock’s support for first-generation graduate students and the way work works to directly improve, increase, and sustain the profession.

The annual award will be presented on Sunday, June 30, 2024 at the ¹ú²úÊÓƵÍø Annual Conference in San Diego, California.
